More about SDU
The Staff Development Unit (SDU) is a dynamic unit responsible for delivering and facilitating continuing professional development for all Latrobe Regional Hospital staff and the promotion of best practice.
This is achieved by development of education programs by our specialised staff, facilitating programs conducted by external organisations at Latrobe Regional Hospital and promotion of internal and external professional development opportunities.
SDU also administers traineeships for clinical and non-clinical staff.
The Unit is also active in the promotion of inter-professional and regional education via collaboration with local health care organisation, through the Nurse Education Gippsland forum and provision of education to all health care disciplines at Latrobe Regional Hospital.
SDU has Clinical Educators in most clinical areas of the Hospital. They provide support and education by being accessible to staff and facilitating regular education sessions.
Agreements are in place with various universities and TAFE colleges to provide clinical placements for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The unit based Clinical Educators provide clinical support for graduate nurses and all clinical staff.

LRH has a communications department which is responsible for coordinating media requests, interviews and public relations.
All media attending the hospital, (including photographers and camera crews) must be accompanied by the Media and Communications Manager or a member of our Executive team.
The rights and privacy of our patients are our primary concern and take priority over media requests.

The Gippsland Rural Intern Training (GRIT) program employs 15 interns a year through the Intern Match coordinated through the Post Graduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV).
Interns rotate through 5 well-supported rotations to gain full medical registration while developing essential skills and knowledge.
The following rotations are available to interns:
All successfully matched applicants will be provided with a rotation preference form and a leave preference form.

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible to apply for an intern position?
Please see the Post Graduate Medical Council of Victoria's (PMCV) website for eligibility criteria.
How many positions are available?
There are 15 intern positions available. All of these positions are full-time and for one year commencing 15 January 2018.
How are the interviews arranged?
No formal interviews will be held.
How much leave are interns given and how is it allocated?
Interns accrue 5 weeks annual leave. Two weeks are to be taken during the year and the remaining three at the end. Preference for annual leave is submitted with your rotation preference form.
What do I need to provide for my non-clinical reference?
A non-clinical reference is a 200 word reference from someone outside of the medical profession, preferably non-clinical research. This can be from a past employer, sporting group, volunteer organisation or religious sector.
Who is the most appropriate person to provide a clinical reference?
Please ensure consultants who provide a reference for you have worked with you for a period of at least 5 weeks. This should include at least one hospital-based clinical scenario. It is fine to have a medical and surgical-based reference.
Who do I address my cover letter to?

Our graduate programs offer you a dynamic and well-structured graduate year. Our aim is to facilitate and support you, the beginning practitioner in your transition from student to Registered Nurse or Nurse and Midwife by providing a structured clinical support program within a theoretical framework. At Latrobe Regional Hospital you will have the opportunity to build on your existing knowledge and skills in a friendly and well-supported environment.
There are six graduate programs:
- Graduate Nurse Program (Nursing Stream) at Latrobe Regional Hospital.
- Graduate Nurse/Midwife Program (Nursing/Midwifery Stream) at Latrobe Regional Hospital.
- Collaborative Graduate Nurse Program between the acute medical/surgical unit and the acute mental health unit (Nursing Stream) at Latrobe Regional Hospital.
- Collaborative Graduate Nurse Program between Latrobe Regional Hospital and Yarram District Health Service (Nursing Stream).
- Collaborative Graduate Nurse Program between Latrobe Regional Hospital and Latrobe Community Health Service (Nursing Stream).
- Mental Health Postgraduate Nurse Program (Mental Health Stream) at Latrobe Regional Hospital.
Graduate Nurse Program (Nursing Stream)
This is a four month rotation through the general areas of rehabilitation, acute medical/palliative care, acute medical/surgical or orthopaedics. There is a further rotation in acute medical/palliative care, acute medical/surgical or orthopaedics. There is a third rotation in an elective specialty unit.
Electives include four months in either:
- Critical Care
- Health Independence Program
- Hospital in the Home
- Mental Health
- Operating Suite (including two of the following areas: day surgery, anaesthetics, scrub-scout and recovery)
Graduate Nurse/Midwife Program (Nursing/Midwifery Stream)
This program is intended for graduates with a double degree in Nursing and Midwifery. This graduate year is suitable for graduates interested in consolidating their knowledge in both disciplines.
Latrobe Regional Hospital midwifery services consist of an 18-bed women’s health unit with 900 births a year. There is a full range of services, including midwifery antenatal clinic, pre-admission, antenatal, labour and postnatal care, domiciliary care, lactation clinic and a level two special care nursery.
Rotations will include both:
- six months in either medical or surgical, in two separate three-month rotations
- six months in the women’s health unit, in two separate three-month rotations.
Collaborative Graduate Nurse Programs (Nursing Stream)
These programs enable you to practice health care provision through the trajectory of illness. It includes primary/preventative health care, acute inpatient care and care in the patient’s own environment.
There are three separate programs:
Collaborative Graduate Nurse Program between the acute medical/surgical unit and the acute mental health unit.
You will gain experience in the acute medical/surgical unit (Tanjil) and the acute mental health unit (Flynn). The program consists of four 3-month rotations which alternate between medical/surgical and mental health, adding up to a total of six months in each unit. The program is intended for graduates with an interest in both general and mental health nursing.
Collaborative Graduate Nurse Program between Latrobe Regional Hospital and Yarram District Health Service.
You will gain experience in two acute hospitals, one in a regional and the other in a rural setting, combined with a community rotation. The program consists of two, 6-month rotations. Six months will be at Latrobe Regional Hospital in the medical/surgical unit and six months will be at Yarram District Health Service in acute medical, the Urgent Care department, district nursing and community palliative care.
Graduate Nurse Program between Latrobe Regional Hospital and Latrobe Community Health Service.
You will gain experience in an acute hospital and community setting. The program consists of three, 4-month rotations. Eight months will be at Latrobe Regional Hospital in the medical/surgical and the medical/palliative care units and four months will be at the Latrobe Community Health Service in district nursing and community palliative care.
Mental Health Postgraduate Nurse Program (Mental Health Stream)
The 12 month Postgraduate Mental Health Program is designed for nurses who have a strong interest and passion to work in the mental health field. The program has been designed for participants to gain acute inpatient experience, as well as the opportunity to experience a wide variety of mental health services offered in the area.
Current rotations are as follows:
- 2 weeks orientation
- 21 weeks acute adult, Flynn Unit
- 12 weeks acute psychogeriatric, Macalister Unit
- 8 weeks Secured Extended Care Unit
- 4 weeks Consultation Liaison/Emergency Department Team
- 4 week elective of your choice (Adult/Aged/Child and youth community mental health services, mother and baby unit, high dependency assessment unit, perinatal emotional health program, dual diagnosis, suicide prevention program, forensic specialist
- Additional 8 days paid study days
As part of the program, the expectation is that you will enrol in postgraduate studies to complete the Diploma of Mental Health and the opportunity to complete your Master of Mental Health. The program incorporates and articulates directly with the Master of Mental Health through Latrobe University. The course is offered by mixed mode via distance education, face-to-face tutorials and attendance at mandatory study days. Clinical placements including specific objectives and learning opportunities form the basis of our Graduate Program.
Master of Mental Health course structure
The course aims to prepare students as mental health practitioners and has three exit points; certificate, postgraduate diploma and masters level. By completing the program through Latrobe Regional Hospital you will obtain credits for two university subjects.

- recent clinical appraisals: 3 for applicants to any of the programs except the dual Graduate Nurse/Midwifery Program where 4 clinical appraisals are required (2 in nursing and 2 in midwifery)
Nursing Stream, Nursing/Midwifery and Collaborative Nursing Stream applicants will also need to apply online to the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria Nurse Computer Match service: http://computermatching.pmcv.com.au
Mental Health Postgraduate Nurse Program applicants do not need to apply to Nurse Computer Match. You will need to apply online to Latrobe Regional Hospital.
Candidates who are applying privately (ie: candidates who are ineligible to apply through Nurse Computer Match) may still apply online to Latrobe Regional Hospital.
The closing date for applications is Friday 21 July 2017.
Latrobe Regional Hospital will be holding an information evening about all of the programs on Monday 5 June 2017 from 6-8pm. This will be held in the auditorium at the hospital. You do not need to RSVP.
The evening will consist of summaries of all the programs, presentations by current graduates, information stalls about all of the units and facilities involved in the programs, a role-play demonstrating the multiple mini interview technique, hospital tours and supper.
