Local businesses benefit from LRH expansion

Gippsland businesses are benefiting from a financial injection as a result of the Latrobe Regional Hospital expansion.

The project’s major contractor, Cockram Construction Ltd has so far awarded more than $8 million in contracts to local tradespeople and suppliers – the latest being long-standing Latrobe Valley company, Carpet Country which will supply carpet and vinyl for the new buildings.

Other Gippsland companies to secure work on the project include:

·         Millers Plumbing, Morwell (plumbing services)

·         Morwell Shopfitters (windows and glazing)

·         Valleyclad, Traralgon (sheet and aluminium cladding)

·         Kingbuilt, Moe (carpentry)

·         M&P Painting Contractors, Traralgon (painting)

·         M&K Davis Bricklaying, Maffra (bricklaying)

In addition, numerous local suppliers and businesses have directly and indirectly provided services to the project and contractors.

When completed in 2017, the expansion at the rear of the existing hospital will feature an emergency department which is triple the size of the existing facility and a cardiac catheterisation laboratory to support patients with heart health concerns.

Other major features of the project include two suites for endoscopy procedures, two new wards and a new main entrance to the hospital.

Cockram Construction project manager Ross Dowling said local companies had been highly competitive in seeking contracts to supply materials or labour.

“Most of the contract packages on offer attracted applications from Gippsland businesses – some have been successful and some haven’t, but we always look for local content where we can,” Mr Dowling said. “Many of these sub-contractors have been a part of the local construction landscape for a long time and we are pleased they are part of a project which is so important to their community.”

Currently there are about 100 workers on site as the multi-storey building begins to take shape.
