Community,

A chance for Gippsland medicos to connect with colleagues

Gippsland healthcare workers are being encouraged to take time out of their busy schedule to connect with experts in their profession and colleagues from across the region.

The Gippsland Healthcare Symposium will be held in partnership with a consortium of 11 Gippsland health services at Federation University, Churchill on Friday 24 November.

It will include interactive workshops, roundtable discussions, guest presenters and networking opportunities.

The program will cover topics such as lessons from the Coroners Court, trauma, anaphylaxis, delirium and work-life balance.

Gippsland Region Nursing and Midwifery Education Coordinator Emma O’Neill said the symposium would provide a day to interact with colleagues.

“People will hear engaging stories from experts in their field with an opportunity to interact face-to-face. We want people to go away re-inspired with passion for the profession. If we look after our health workers, then we can look after our communities,” she said.

Keynote speaker Dr Paul Callaghan who is an Indigenous leader and author will be talking about work-life balance and providing culturally-appropriate care.

Other speakers include Emergency Physician and Retrieval Consultant Dr Ben McKenzie talking about anaphylaxis.

Nurse Practitioner Robert Gresham will be covering tips for effective delirium management.

Federation University research fellow Elissa Dabkowski will be discussing falls risk awareness in regional Victorian hospitals.

Nurse Consultant Maureen Cushnie will discuss case studies from the Coroners Court of Victoria and mental health nurse Bosede Adetifa will talk about the impacts of trauma on staff and patients.

ANZACATA Arts Therapist Sharyn Latham will be providing interactive activities on creative self-care strategies.

Representatives from the nursing and midwifery health programs will be on hand to discuss their work.
