Gippsland is a large and diverse region in eastern Victoria, extending from Melbourne’s outer east to the New South Wales border, including rural, regional, coastal, and alpine environments.

It covers more than 41,000 square kilometres with six local government areas:

• Bass Coast 
• Baw Baw
• East Gippsland
• Latrobe
• South Gippsland 
• Wellington 

Gippsland has a population of 300,000 people.

Traditional Owners and Custodians include the Gunaikurnai, Bidawal, Bunurong/Boonwurrung, Woiwurrung peoples, Jaithmathang, and Monero/Ngarigo Nations, as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from other regions.

Most Gippsland residents were born in Australia, many multicultural communities live here.

Local Public Health Units

GRPHU is one of nine Local Public Health Units (LPHUs) in Victoria that form the LPHU Network.

This Network works in partnership with the Victorian Department of Health to deliver coordinated, locally led action on public health.

LPHUs use community knowledge and local stakeholders in a range of sectors to prevent diseases, promote health, and respond to public health incidents in each region.

LPHUs were established in the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and now manage more than 80 notifiable conditions as well as leading local responses to communicable and non-communicable diseases.
