LRH opens second cath lab

Gippsland heart patients are getting expanded care closer to home now that Latrobe Regional Health has opened a second cardiac catheterisation laboratory with state-of-the-art technology.

The new cath lab is the first in Victoria with the latest equipment featuring integrated artificial intelligence which reduces radiation and provides better images.

It enables doctors to see what’s going on inside the heart or vessels more precisely, so devices such as stents are able to be placed with precision.

LRH Cardiology Director Dr Derk Pol said the new cath lab will provide local people with faster access to critical, life-saving procedures.

Dr Pol said Gippsland had some of the highest rates of cardio-vascular disease in Australia, highlighting the need for more cardiac services in the region.

“This second cath lab offers much more than advanced technology. It’s about equity, speed, safety, and community-centered care,” Dr Pol said.

“Patients who might have faced a long wait or journey are now able to get emergency treatment promptly, stay closer to home, and benefit from efficient service.

“It’s not just about capacity, it’s about bringing critical heart care into the heart of the community.”
