LRH has an experienced Aboriginal Health Unit which has worked to connect our services to culture and Country right across Gippsland.
Our staff and Community Champions volunteers take part in significant events such as NAIDOC Week and Close the Gap day.
When you come to the hospital entrance, you’ll be welcomed by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags. Our reception areas have plaques which acknowledge and recognise the traditional custodians of the land on which our health services are situated. Local Aboriginal artists have shared their creative flair by designing artwork for our walls – not because we want our hospital to look good, but to let you and your family know this is a safe and welcoming place for you to receive care.
If you need some fresh air and a quiet space, LRH has a garden which celebrates the Gunaikurnai story through artwork created by school children from Morwell. You can enter the garden through the Nicholson Rehabilitation Unit.
LRH’s expansion which opens in 2024 will feature an incredible new lobby area with a specially commissioned wall design created by a local Aboriginal artist. You will also see new facilities for our Aboriginal Health Liaison officers and Aboriginal patients and families.
Our liaison officers Gail Mounsey and Bonnie O’Shanassy are Gunaikurnai women and have taught our staff and Community Champions about the significance of Country.
